چکیده

This paper explores time-distance gait parameters across walking speeds. Our approach consists of designing an experimental setup to gather walking data at various speeds, analyzing time-distance features with respect to speeds. We explain the motivations of this study and the details of the experimental setup that allows people to walk naturally on the ground level floor and at the same time achieve the walking speed-control goal. The characteristics of gait features are demonstrated at the interand intra-individual variations.

Mixed gaits in small avian terrestrial locomotion

Scientists have historically categorized gaits discretely (e.g. regular gaits such as walking, running). However, previous results suggest that animals such as birds might mix or regularly or stochastically switch between gaits while maintaining a steady locomotor speed. Here, we combined a novel and completely automated large-scale study (over one million frames) on motions of the center of ma...

The role of plantigrady and heel-strike in the mechanics and energetics of human walking with implications for the evolution of the human foot.

Human bipedal locomotion is characterized by a habitual heel-strike (HS) plantigrade gait, yet the significance of walking foot-posture is not well understood. To date, researchers have not fully investigated the costs of non-heel-strike (NHS) walking. Therefore, we examined walking speed, walk-to-run transition speed, estimated locomotor costs (lower limb muscle volume activated during walking...

Pectoral fin coordination and gait transitions in steadily swimming juvenile reef fishes.

A common feature of animal locomotion is its organization into gaits with distinct patterns of movement and propulsor use for specific speeds. In terrestrial vertebrates, limb gaits have been extensively studied in diverse taxa and gait transitions have been shown to provide efficient locomotion across a wide range of speeds. In contrast, examination of gaits in fishes has focused on axial gait...

Neuromuscular effort predicts walk-run transition speed in normal and adapted human gaits.

Often, humans and other animals move in a manner that minimizes energy costs. It is more economical to walk at slow speeds, and to run at fast speeds. Here, we asked whether humans select a gait that minimizes neuromuscular effort under novel and unfamiliar conditions, by imposing interlimb asymmetry during split-belt treadmill locomotion. The walk-run transition speed changed markedly across d...

Idealized walking and running gaits minimize work

Even though human legs allow a wide repertoire of movements, when people travel by foot they mostly use one of two locomotor patterns, namely, walking and running. The selection of these two gaits from the plethora of options might be because walking and running require less metabolic energy than other more unusual gaits. We addressed this possibility previously using numerical optimization of ...
